- Semiconductors
What is a semiconductor?
A semiconductor is a material capable of controlling the flow of electricity, behaving as a conductor or an insulator depending on the conditions. This capability makes it the foundation of the chips and electronic devices that make much of today’s technology possible.
Premier Group is committed to making a technological leap through synthetic diamond-based semiconductors, a material with properties especially suited for high-power applications, high temperatures, and extreme operating conditions.
Performance taken to the extreme
Synthetic diamond possesses properties that are particularly valuable for a new generation of power electronics. Its high thermal conductivity facilitates the dissipation of heat generated by electronic devices—one of the main challenges as power increases—and allows for the design of systems capable of handling higher thermal demands with less reliance on intensive cooling solutions.
Added to this capability is its behavior under extreme temperature, radiation, and voltage conditions, which opens up opportunities in applications where semiconductor stability and reliability are critical. These characteristics are especially relevant for sectors such as electric mobility, advanced industry, telecommunications, defense, and high-density digital infrastructure.
Premier Group develops its proposal around synthetic diamond obtained through CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) processes, within a manufacturing chain that ranges from material generation and preparation to its transformation into wafers and electronic devices. The process incorporates stages of growth, cutting, high-precision polishing, doping, lithography, etching, metallization, and electrical and thermal testing.
Advanced industry with institutional backing
Premier Group has signed an agreement with the Basque Government to develop its synthetic diamond semiconductor manufacturing project in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The initiative places the Basque Country within the company’s strategy to drive new industrial capabilities linked to a technology that is still emerging and has high potential for international development.
The project is set within a European context marked by the need to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity, reduce external dependence, and consolidate supply chains associated with technologies considered strategic. Furthermore, advanced manufacturing requires large investments, highly specialized knowledge, energy availability, and close collaboration between industry, institutions, and technology centers.
The project includes access to support programs such as SPRI, EVE, PERTE ERHA, and PERTE Chip—instruments aimed at fostering new industrial, technological, and energy investments and accelerating the development of high-value-added production capabilities.
Technology that generates industry
The impact of a semiconductor factory goes far beyond its own production capacity. It is an industry intensive in knowledge, investment, and innovation that requires professionals specialized in engineering, physics, chemistry, materials, electronics, industrial processes, and energy technologies, generating high-value-added economic activity around each facility.
Premier Group’s projects are designed to promote the creation of highly skilled employment and act as a driving force for specialized companies, technology providers, and advanced industrial supply chains. The implementation of new production capabilities can thus contribute to developing knowledge and economic activity that remain linked to the territory in the long term.
There is also a strategic dimension. Increasing the European capacity to develop and manufacture semiconductor technologies allows for capturing a larger share of its value chain within the territory, reducing external industrial dependencies and strengthening essential sectors for electric mobility, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, energy, defense, and advanced industry.
